Frequently Asked Question
Quick answers to the questions we hear most often from Irish organisations.
The Adult Red Trainer simulates the full choking response: abdominal thrusts using the front pad, and back slaps using the rear back-slap pad. Both provide tactile feedback confirming correct hand placement, depth, and motion — exactly replicating what a first aider would experience in a real choking emergency.
Traditional choking training uses a plastic manikin that cannot replicate the experience of assisting a real person. The Act+Fast Trainer is worn by a real person — so the first aider feels actual human resistance, positions their hands correctly on a real body, and builds genuine muscle memory. Manikins simply cannot provide this.
No — this is one of its most significant advantages. No manikin is needed. The trainer is worn by a real person, making it far more portable, more cost-effective, and easier to use in any setting — from a hospital training room to a restaurant kitchen to a school classroom.
The Act+Fast Anti-Choking Trainer is the world's first anti-choking training vest. It is worn by a real person and allows a first aider to practise the full choking response — including abdominal thrusts and back slaps — on an actual human body, with realistic physical feedback. Invented by a doctor and in continuous professional use since 2008.
The Act+Fast Trainer was invented by a medical doctor and first brought to market in 2008 by Act Fast Medical, USA. It was the first product of its kind ever created and has since been adopted by training organisations, healthcare systems, and businesses in over 70 countries worldwide.

The Act+Fast Anti-Choking Trainer is the world's first training vest designed specifically to simulate a choking rescue. It is worn by a real person — the trainee acts as the choking victim while the first aider practises the correct response on an actual human body. Unlike a poster, a video, or a plastic manikin, the Act+Fast Trainer builds genuine physical confidence and muscle memory. Invented by a doctor in 2008, it is now used by training organisations, healthcare providers, schools, and businesses in over 70 countries worldwide.
The trainer vest is placed over the trainee's clothing. The first aider stands behind them and performs abdominal thrusts using the front pad — positioned just above the navel — which provides tactile feedback confirming correct hand placement and motion. The rear pad allows back slap practice between the shoulder blades, completing the full choking response protocol. The trainee experiences the sensation of being assisted, while the first aider builds the physical technique and confidence to act in a real emergency. The whole process takes minutes to set up and requires no specialist equipment or space.
Very. Because the trainer is worn by a real person, the first aider is working with an actual human torso — feeling real resistance, positioning their hands on a real body, and performing the correct motion at the correct depth. This is fundamentally different from practising on a manikin or reading instructions. The feedback from the pads confirms correct technique in real time. Users consistently report that training with the Act+Fast Trainer feels far closer to a real emergency than any alternative, which is precisely why it produces more confident and more accurate responders.
Absolutely. The Act+Fast Trainer is designed to be intuitive and accessible for complete beginners with no prior first aid experience. The abdominal thrust pad clearly marks correct hand placement, and the user manual provides straightforward step-by-step instructions. Most people are performing the correct technique within minutes of their first session. The trainer is equally valuable for experienced first aiders refreshing their skills — the physical practice keeps technique sharp and response times fast regardless of experience level.
Wipe the vest and pads down with a mild disinfectant wipe or a damp cloth after each training session. Do not submerge the trainer in water and avoid harsh chemical cleaners or solvents, which may damage the materials. Allow the trainer to dry fully before storing. Full cleaning instructions are included in the user manual, available free to download in your language from our Resources section.
The Act+Fast Adult Trainer is built to withstand intensive, repeated use in professional training environments. The vest, pads, and bladder assembly are constructed from durable materials designed to last through hundreds of training sessions when properly maintained. With correct care — including regular cleaning and proper storage — your trainer will provide reliable performance for years. Replacement foam plugs are available should they be needed.
The Adult Red Trainer includes both the abdominal thrust pad and a rear back-slap pad, enabling practice of the full choking response protocol as recommended by the Irish Red Cross, ARC, and AHA — 5 abdominal thrusts followed by 5 back slaps. The Adult Blue Trainer covers abdominal thrusts only, with the back-slap pad sold separately. Please note: Act Fast Ireland stocks the Adult Red Trainer only. The Blue Trainer is not available through us. For the complete protocol training experience, the Red Trainer is the recommended choice.
The foam plugs supplied with the trainer are designed for repeated use. Beginner students typically require more resistance and will use the standard plugs, while more advanced trainees can use softer plugs for a more realistic simulation. Over time and with heavy use the plugs will compress and may need replacing. Replacement foam plugs can be ordered — contact Act Fast Ireland for details.
Yes. The Children's Yellow Trainer is specifically designed for safe use as a training aid worn by child trainees aged 5 to 11. It is CE marked, quality assured, and manufactured to the same standards as the adult trainer. The vest is proportioned for child-sized bodies and uses the paediatric choking response protocol. It is used safely in schools, creches, and paediatric healthcare settings across Ireland and in over 70 countries worldwide.

It is a long-term investment for any organisation training staff in paediatric first aid.
